The Killers have become one of the biggest acts on the rock music scene today, combining elements of indie, alternative and post-punk revival that has catapulted them to star status all over the world. The band got its start in 2001 when lead singer Brandon Flowers was dumped by his first band Blush Response and he began searching for a new group. A newspaper ad got him in touch with guitarist Dave Keuning, and the duo began to write songs together. After drummer Ronnie Vanucci Jr. and Mark Stoermer joined the band one year later, The Killers were born and were well on their way to being one of the few rock groups to bridge the pop and rock divide and achieve mainstream success.
The band's debut album was one of the most highly-anticipated releases in years and the record certainly did not disappoint. Hot Fuss has sold more than seven million units worldwide and reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart. The album's debut single, "Somebody Told Me" would reach No. 51 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart, but the record's runaway hit was "Mr. Brightside." The song would peak at No. 10 on the Hot 100 chart and rank in the top 20 on pop, digital, alternative and adult pop charts. Hot Fuss was nominated for three Grammy Awards and The Killers also won the Best International Band award that year from the UK music magazine, New Musical Express (NME).
The Killers' second album, Sam's Town, was one of the most highly-publicized releases in years and was a huge commercial success, but received mixed reviews from critics. The album sold more than 700,000 copies during its first week on the market and produced a slew of successful singles like "When You Were Young," "Read My Mind," "Bones" and "For Reasons Unknown." The album would also prove to be more successful than their first and would climb all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard 200.
In 2008, The Killers released their third studio album, Day & Age, which included the popular hit, "Human," which would climb to No. 32 on the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart. After embarking on a worldwide tour to promote the album, the band went back into the studio to record their new album, Battle Born. The album's first single, "Runaways," has already received significant airplay on radio stations all over the United States and could prove to be the band's biggest release to date.
