Indie rock has certainly gained steam over the course of the late '90s and 2000s, and Vampire Weekend has carried the torch for the genre and found mainstream success in the process. The group, consisting of Ezra Koenig on vocals and guitar, Rostam Batmanglij on guitar and keyboard, Chris Tomson on drums and Chris Baio on bass, met during their time at Columbia University and quickly realized that they had some serious musical chemistry. The band played several shows at Columbia, and credited a school battle of the bands concert that helped them attract many new listeners. Vampire Weekend quickly made a name for themselves for their unique sound and lyrics, as well as worldly rhythms that helped them appeal to a wide range of musical tastes.

After cutting their teeth with several EPs and touring extensively throughout 2007, Vampire Weekend signed with XL Records, which released The Mansard Roof EP, the band's first release under their new label. In 2008, the band released their first self-titled album, which debuted in the Top 20 of U.S. and U.K. charts and featured the major hits, "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa," "A-Punk," "The Kids Don't Stand A Chance" and "Oxford Comma."

In 2010, Vampire Weekend came roaring back with the release of their second studio album, Contra. The record featured songs like "Cousins," "Holiday," "White Sky" and "Horchata," and helped the bandmates nab their first Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Album. After the major success of their second album and a jam-packed touring schedule, the band took some time off and went back into the studio to hone their sound in anticipation of their third album. The record, Modern Vampires of the City, is slated for a mid-2013 release and is one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year. It's rare that a band can come out of nowhere and shake the foundations of their genre, but Vampire Weekend has done just that and their story is just beginning.
