Other: The album Yankee Hotel Foxtrot became a best seller after their label dropped the band because of it.

Wilco is built on the alternative country foundation of a band known as Uncle Tupelo. Uncle Tupleo ended in 1994, when singer Jay Farrar left the band due to differences with co-singer Jeff Tweedy. All of the remaining members of Uncle Tupelo stayed with Tweedy, but decided not to keep the name, instead going with "Wilco." Farrar went on to found the band Son Volt.

Wilco's debut album, A.M., stuck with the alt country sound familiar to fans of Uncle Tupelo. The album was a commercial disappointment, though it found some favor with critics. The follow-up, Being There, arrived a year later with a sound that moved away from alt country. Notably, the 19 track double album sold for a single album price thanks to a deal Tweedy struck with the label that cost the band the proceeds from the sales.

The band returned to the studio in 1997 and ended up with Summerteeth, a very personal album for Tweedy. The album was another commercial failure for the band. With the label feeling pressure to cut costs and turn out hits, Wilco's relationship with Reprise Records soured. The pressure came to a head with 2002's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot album.

The band itself suffered during the recording of Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, leading to the dismissal of one member once completed. Reprise Records felt there was no single on the album, rejecting it and dismissing the band. The band negotiated to receive all rights to the album, taking the masters with them. While searching for a new label, they put it up on their website. Between the web buzz and the rather public "break up" from Reprise, Yankee Hotel Foxtrot eventually became Wilco's best selling album when released by Nonesuch Records.

Wilco continued to tour and return to the studio throughout the 2000s, while the bands membership experienced additional changes. By 2004 the lineup solidified with A Ghost Is Born. 2009 saw their most successful single "You Never Know" reach #1 on the Adult album alternative charts. A firm believer in the influence of the Internet in building fan relationships, Wilco streams most of their albums from their website, allowing fans to listen without paying.

When not back in the studio working on new albums, Wilco is usually on a stage, bringing live music to their fans. Born of the breakup of a different band, Wilco has demonstrated a knack for overcoming adversity and continually turning out critically acclaimed music. See them on a stage near you.
