Other: Pefers the term "contemporary instrumental" to New Age.
It's been hundreds of years since classical concerts reigned supreme, but Yanni continues to keep the genre alive. Although the reputable Greek musician and composer's instrumental tunes seem to be inspired by legends such as Mozart and Beethoven, his groundbreaking music is considered modern and new. Even those who aren't so familiar with Yanni's works will likely recognize one of his tunes, as many of them have been used in television, especially for major sporting events like the Olympic Games.
Like many notable musicians in history, Yanni learned how to play the piano without knowing how to read music. While attending the University of Minnesota he joined a local band called Chameleon, and later moved to Los Angeles to pursue movie soundtrack work. After meeting John Tesh and Charlie Adams and forming a band with the pair, he went on tour during the late 80s.
Since the early 90s, Yanni's musical career has continued to skyrocket. In 1992 he released his first Grammy-nominated album, Dare to Dream. The most notable songs from the LP were used for events like the Super Bowl, the U.S. Open and the Tour de France. In 1993 Yanni decided it was best to return to his homeland for the production of his first live album, which was filmed and recorded at the ancient Herod Atticus Theater in Athens. The video, Yanni Live at the Acropolis, was a huge success upon its release and ultimately became the second bestselling music video of all time.
Since this achievement, Yanni has become an international sensation, performing at some of the world's most exclusive theaters and landmarks, including the Taj Mahal. Even though he decided to take a two-year break in 1998, he got right back in the game and released a number of albums soon thereafter. Yanni has also been touring all throughout the last decade, allowing him to accrue an even larger fan base. He is also currently working to expand his tours into Eastern Europe, Asia and South America. Artists like Yanni show that passion can prevail, as he could have easily taken a permanent sabbatical in the late 90s to enjoy nothing more than the luxuries of life. Instead, he chose to spend his days on stage.
