Legend isn't a term lightly bestowed, but it fits Dolly Parton very nicely. From humble beginnings in Tennessee to the heights of country music stardom, Parton remained humble in her success. She began singing in church at a young age, eventually hitting the radio in Tennessee and appearing at the Grand Ole Opry at the age of thirteen. An encounter and some sage advice from another legend, Johnny Cash, made up her mind to focus on music.
Initial success came in songwriting, not singing for the young Dolly Parton. She penned a couple minor hits for Hank Williams Jr. and Skeeter Davis, among others. A brief, unsuccessful flirtation with pop caused her label to reconsider and allower her to do country. Her first country single was called "Dumb Blonde," and hit #24 on the US Country charts. It would end up on her 1967 debut album Hello, I'm Dolly.
Parton spent much of the rest of the 60s and early 70s on The Porter Wagoner Show, a country music TV variety show headlined by Porter Wagoner. The pair recorded a number of successful duets, but Parton's solo sales lagged. Wagoner suggested she cover "Mule Skinner Blues," and the single was the first in a string of hits for Parton that would culminate with "Jolene" in 1973. "Jolene" was her second #1 hit in the US and charted worldwide.
After "Jolene" Parton's chart-topping success entered its highest phase. She had 8 #1 hits in the late 70s and early 80s, her own TV variety show, a couple hit movies, and enjoyed crossover success on the pop charts. She won her first Grammy in 1978 for the album Here You Come Again. "9 to 5," the theme song to the film of the same name, hit #1 on the country, pop, and adult-contemporary charts simultaneously.
The late 80s saw Parton return to country roots, charting a few hits before the 90s arrived and country music changed significantly. She enjoyed quite a windfall when Whitney Houston covered "I Will Always Love You" in 1991, a song she'd hit #1 with back in 1974.
In 1999, Parton was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame, but she was hardly done yet. Throughout the following decade she continued to make music, as well as take some acting roles, and write music for the Broadway musical adaptation of 9 to 5.
Dolly Parton continues to tour actively and make new music to the delight of fans, many of whom have stayed loyal over a career that spans five decades. Seeing Dolly in concert is a must for country music fans, and music fans in general, as Dolly has been an inspiration to countless artists.
