With complex harmonies mixed with folk sensibilities, Fleet Foxes has been one of the most critically acclaimed bands to emerge from the west coast in quite sometime. Though they have been on the scene just since 2008, this sextet from Portland, Oregon, enjoys a loyal following of fans and is certainly on its way up.
Formed by guitarist and songwriter Robin Pecknold and his high school classmate Skyler Skjelset, Fleet Foxes quickly gained notoriety for its unique style. Despite the fact that they earned no radio airplay during their early days, and also had not released any of their recordings, word of their pleasing vocals combined with ethereal instrumentation quickly spread, and by 2007 they were quickly gaining notoriety.
As their popularity rose, Fleet Foxes released heir debut, the five-song EP Sun Giant. Though it was short, it had a significant impact on the folk scene. Driven by the wistfully epic track "Mykonos" and supported by "Innocent Son," the record was a hit among both critics and fans and set the state for their full-length debut soon after.
Their self-titled debut hit stores in 2008 and was met with immediate praise. Many critics cite the album's organic harmonies as extremely satisfying, and it was considered among the best released that year. The album ushered in somewhat of a changing of the guard in contemporary folk music, and paved the way for similar bands such as The Head and the Heart, Mumford and Sons and The Avett Brothers. It featured a number of songs which many believe will go down as instant classics including the instantly recognizable track "White Winter Hymnal," as well as pastoral musings on songs such as "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" and "Your Protector."
Despite the immense success of their debut, it would be several years until fans were treated to another release from Fleet Foxes. During that time, the band spent much of its days touring the U.S. and internationally as well as pleasing numerous festival crowds with its now-iconic sound. However, the wait was over in 2011 when Helplessness Blues was released. Much like its predecessor, the album was regarded as a masterpiece and included a number of popular songs including "Lorelai" and "Sim Sala Bim."
