Eilleen Edwards grew up poor and sometimes hungry in Timmins, Ontario, singing in bars to help make ends meet. She found that love of music helped her with the hard times, and continued to flirt with singing while still pursuing other careers. By the mid 80's she'd been in some bands and sung backup vocals, but it wasn't until the early 90's that her career heated up.
A demo tape got her signed by Mercury Nashville Records. She decided to change her name, and her (newly) self-titled debut, Shania Twain, arrived in 1993. Sales were lukewarm, but critics were pleased. She collaborated with a rock producer on a follow-up album, The Woman in Me. Twain enjoyed overnight stardom as the album sold 4 million copies before the year was over, and would go on to be Diamond certified, selling over 10 million copies.
Twain's next two albums were similarly successful, vaulting her to super stardom and landing her on the list of top selling artists of all time. After the success of Up! she retreated from music, not returning until 2012 with a new residency show in Las Vegas and the promise of a new album to come.
"Still the One" Vegas Residency
Shania Twain's last tour, "Up!", ended in 2004. In part due to personal issues and physical health, she stopped touring and only released a few singles. Twain documented her road to recovery with a 2011 reality show that ended with the release of a new single and the announcement of a 2 year residency in Las Vegas at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace. Fans starved for their favorite country diva flocked to the first performance on December 1st, 2012.
