There are some country artists that are well known even to those who aren't fans of the genre. From Taylor Swift to Garth Brooks, some artists seem to transcend certain labels. Toby Keith has reached that level thanks to his broad appeal, catchy lyrics and unapologetic patriotism. With nearly two decades of hits under his belt, it is a formula that has served him exceptionally well.
Toby Keith's beginnings are seemingly taken directly from a country song. After picking up and moving to Nashville, Tennessee, Keith was discovered by a flight attendant who liked his sound, and soon after his debut single, "Should've Been A Cowboy," was climbing up the country charts, eventually peaking at number one. It would be a sign of things to come, as his first self-titled album featured a slew of popular songs including "A Little Less Talk and a lot More Action" and "Wish I Didn't Know Now."
It wasn't long before Toby was recording new music for his ever-growing group of fans. In 1994 he released his sophomore album, which cracked the top 10 the country charts and featured the now-classic songs "Big Ol' Truck" and "Who's That Man."
Throughout the '90s there weren't many more hardworking signers out there than Toby Keith. It seemed like he would put out an album year after year, but none were quite as popular as 1999's How Do You Like Me Now?! In what would prove to be one of his biggest crossover hits, the album's title track was among the biggest country hits of the following decade, cementing his place in the music world.
Keith has also been one of the most active musicians in terms of supporting U.S. soldiers. He frequently performs overseas, and has also regularly mentioned his support through his music in songs such as "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue (The Angry American)," which he recorded in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
With 19 number one country hits and counting, including "I Love This Bar" and "Beer for My Horses (which featured music legend Willie Nelson); Toby Keith is definitely a legend in the industry.
