Willie Nelson is a songwriter and country western singer and performer from Abbott, Texas. Willie Nelson began his career as a performer and songwriter. His earliest success was not from recording his own songs, but from writing music for other performers to make famous. Nelson wrote early hits for Billy Walker, Faron Young, Roy Orbison, and Patsy Cline. Nelson became frustrated with his experience in Nashville, and moved to Austin, Texas in the ‘60s. In Austin Willie Nelson became an extremely popular in the “hippie” or “cosmic cowboy” scene that evolved around the Armadillo World Headquarters. Willie Nelson gained creative control of his music career and despite warnings of sure failure from music executives, nelson wrote and recorded groundbreaking albums like Red-Headed Stranger and Stardust. Nelson’s success continued with a long collaboration with Waylon Jennings. In the ‘80s his success continued with his work with the Highwaymen. In the ‘90s and 2000’s, Willie Nelson has continued to release critically acclaimed albums and continued to tour.
Willie plays all of the country, but some of his best shows are in his home state of Texas. Catch Willie Nelson performing at The Backyard or Stubb's BBQ in Austin, Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, or at his home away from home Luckenbock, Texas. Willie Nelson is the top star from Texas' country music scene, so seeing him in his native environment is quite a treat.
Along with his music, Willie Nelson is also known for his excesses, his politics, his advocacy work, and his movie and television career. Willie Nelson helped establish Farm Aid, has pushed for the use of bio-fuels, has advocated the reform of Marijuana laws, and has been a longtime peace advocate. His tax problems of the 1990’s have also lent to his image as a renegade. His approach to country music has helped to redefine the genre and blend in elements of jazz, rock, and folk. Willie Nelson has won 9 Country Music Awards, 10 Grammys, 5 Academy of Country Music Awards, and 7 American Music Awards. Willie Nelson is a Texas and American icon and a living legend. Willie Nelson 3 3
Nothing but Blue Skies For my friends birthday I got her 2 tickets to go see Bob Dylan, John Mellencamp and my favorite, Willie Nelson. It's amazing to see these three musical geniuses in a lifetime, let alone at one place on one day, and it wasn't even part of one of the music festivals in Austin. It was at the Dell Diamond baseball park....not your typical concert venue...but also not your typical concert. The concert lasted about 4 or 5 hours, but no one batted an eye with all the great music that was playing! I heard songs that I knew every word...songs that I couldn't understand any of the words (thank you Bob)...and songs that I knew but didn't know that one of these epic artists wrote them. It was a great night of reliving where you were when you first heard that song and also making new ones with friends. If these three guys come into town again....together or seperately...I would definitely take the time to see all these legends again. July 7, 2011
Willie Nelson is one of the best ever I've been fortunate to see Willie Nelson a half dozen times in concert and can say that he's truly one of the best. A Willie Nelson show is special because he is one of the legends in music with a song list full of hits. Willie also has a great voice that makes his live show as good as his recorded albums. Every musician alive loves Willie Nelson, so you never know who is going to wind up on stage with him (Snoop Dogg, Billy Bob Thornton, Merle Haggard, Dale Watson, John Mellencamp). The crowd at a Willie Nelson show is also a must see. You'll see a mix of hippies, cowboys & yuppies - but everyone gets along. The beer at the show is going to be Lone Star, Pabst or the like. A Willie Nelson show is a salt of the earth experience, it's not going to have fancy special effects and lighting. It is Willie Nelson playing his guitar and singing on stage with his band - and its incredible every time. August 13, 2010
Always on my mind ... A rookie venue mistake: no shade and a lack of food, nearly ruined my first Willie Nelson Fourth of July Picnic 2010 at the new Backyard at Bee Cave outdoor venue. It was the thought of seeing an up-close performance by an iconic singer-songwriter that made me buck up and stay until Willie Nelson took the stage late in the evening. Joined by his little sister Bobbie, on the grand piano, and a crew of performers that played earlier in the day (Kris Kristofferson, David Allan Coe, other members of the Nelson family, etc.), the man did not disappoint. Looking the part, with Trigger and an American flag bandana and cowboy hat, Willie played to a gushing audience, enthralled by their hero. Perhaps the second best thing about the concert next to Willie himself, was the eclectic crowd that stuck it out. I situated myself near the left side of the stage with an unobstructed view of the singers, lights and front of the crowd. The highlight for me, was Willie's performance of "Whiskey River." Other performers had tried it earlier in the day, and just nothing compared to Willie singing it. September 28, 2010
