Perhaps best known to the masses for performing with a costume comprised of a cartoonish mouse head, deadmau5 has grown to be one of the most popular DJs in recent years. The stage name of Canadian performer Joel Thomas Zimmerman, he has emerged as a staple in a number of genres ranging from techno to dubstep and has become a mainstay in clubs across North America.
Deadmau5 released his debut album, Get Scraped, in 2006 but it was met with relatively little fanfare. He released another record, Vexillology, the same year and it experienced a similar reception. After mild success with 2007's Full Circle, deadmau5 was on the verge of a breakout thanks to a collaboration with Billy Newton-Davis and Melleefresh that earned him a great deal of praise.
After being nominated for several awards in 2008, deadmau5 released his first commercially successful album in 2008, Random Album Title. The record was first available only electronically, but a physical copy was later made public. Thanks to tracks such as "Faxing Berlin" and "I Remember," deadmau5 grew in mainstream popularity and appeared on the popular CW series Gossip Girl.
Since 2008, deadmau5 has had some of the most popular dance tracks around. Along with "I Remember," two of his collaborations have reached the number one spot on Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay chart, and he has headlined a number of events across the globe including the Oxygen Festival in Ireland and LovEvolution in San Francisco.
When his native Canada hosted the Winter Olympics in 2010, deadmau5 was thrust into the spotlight. His tracks made a number of appearances throughout the event's two-week telecast, most notably "Moar Ghosts N Stuff," which was played during the women's moguls. Additionally, he was able to perform during the medal presentations of several events including men's luge and women's biathlon.
Most telling of deadmau5's meteoric rise through the music industry has been his inclusion on the video game DJ Hero 2. Players can complete the game as the famous DJ, and one of his songs is included on the track list.
Deadmau5 has also gained notoriety over the last several years due to the extensive use of his songs on the wildly popular reality show Jersey Shore, earning endorsements from much of the show's cast. With his third studio album, 4x4=12, dropping in late 2010, the 29-year-old DJ will likely have fans for years to come.
