With a knack for catchy lyrics and infectious tunes, Ke$ha has gone from back up singer to full-fledged star in a remarkably short amount of time. The dance-pop star has released hit after hit, and from the radio to the club, it's tough to escape her songs.
Ke$ha grew up with music flowing through her veins as the child of singer-songwriter Pebe Sebert in Nashville, Tennessee. Though her family struggled financially, Ke$ha was encouraged by her mother to pursue her music career, and by the time she was 17, she was well on her way.
Her earliest recording caught the attention of record producers, and she was soon working with a number of up-and-coming young acts. Along with co-writing a song for The Veronicas and appearing in the video for Katy Perry's single "I Kissed a Girl," Ke$ha made a name for herself when she sang back up vocals on the 2009 Flo Rida tune "Right Round." The song reached number one thanks in large part to her contribution to the track's chorus, and she was soon signed to a solo record deal.
Ke$ha's first album, Animal, was released in 2010, but it was her debut single, "Tik Tok," that launched her career after it was released at the end of 2009. The track was immensely popular and broke the record for digital downloads by a female artist. By the time her album came out in January of 2010, she was already a household name. Thanks to a a number of other popular songs off Animal, including "Your Love is My Drug" and "Take it Off," the album reached the number one spot on the Billboard 200 and stayed there for nine straight weeks.
Encouraged by the success of her debut, Ke$ha soon began performing to sold out arenas as Rihanna's opening act, and it was not long before songs from her follow up, Cannibal, started hitting the airwaves in late 2010. The first single, "We R Who We R" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, the 17th song ever to do so.
Though Ke$ha has earned criticism for her juvenile lyrics and formulaic sound, it is hard to argue with results. Few artists have had such an impact so quickly, and Ke$ha is just getting started.
Kesha 1 1
Great Pop Show Not everyone's up of tea, but she puts on a good show and the songs are the best sort of catchy. Certainly won't be bored at a Kesha show, which is equal parts concert and theater experience. July 26, 2013
