The festival scene in the United States has seen a great resurgence over the past decade, and the Bonnaroo Music Festival has played an enormous role in bringing the best artists from a variety of genres to one place. Held on a sprawling 700-acre farm in scenic Manchester, Tenn., Bonnaroo began in 2002 and was inspired by other large-scale outdoor festivals put on in the past, like Coachella and similar events hosted by Phish. Without any major promotion, the first Bonnaroo sold out in nearly two weeks and has become the standard by which all summer festivals are measured.
Music takes center stage at Bonnaroo, and in addition to the festival's amazing 2013 lineup, the event has managed to attract top acts in recent years, including Nine Inch Nails, Radiohead, Phish, Arcade Fire, The Strokes, The Black Keys, Dave Matthews Band, The Allman Brothers Band, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. However, while music is certainly the focus at the festival, Bonnaroo has reinvented the conventional music festival and gave it its own unique twist.
Activity tents sprawl all over the grounds at Bonnaroo, where visitors have a chance to do a little shopping or enjoy a few recreational activities. Stop by The Academy in Planet Roo to participate in an art workshop, brush up on your gardening skills or join a music lesson. The Cinema Tent is a popular stop for those needing to escape the heat, and features special screenings by guest filmmakers and even Q&A sessions with musicians and comedians. Last but not least, check out the Centeroo Fountain and Market to explore the wares of hundreds of artists, craftsmen and vendors and pick up some souvenirs from the trip.
While staying at a hotel in the Manchester area is possible, most Bonnaroo fans take the plunge and camp out for several days in the scenic area. RV and ten,t rentals are available, as well as group camping rates for those who will be coming to the festival in large groups. From top to bottom, the Bonnaroo Music Festival has evolved steadily over the years to become the highlight of the festival calendar and there are certainly thousands of people already making their travel plans for summer's main event!
