The Coachella Music Festival has grown into one of the biggest outdoor art and music festivals in the United States, blending alternative, indie rock, electronica and hip-hop into its stellar lineups. The festival started back in 1999 when Paul Tollet and Rick Van Santen of Goldenvoice Productions brought together their idea of merging various musical genres. The inaugural show featured a compelling list of artists including Tool, The Chemical Brothers, Beck, Rage Against the Machine and Jurassic 5, but the concert ended up racking $800,000 worth of debt for Goldenvoice. As a result, the company was sold to Anschultz Entertainment Group, which brought back the festival in 2001 with headliner Jane's Addiction.
While the 2001 festival was a one-day event, over successive years the festival began to expand to multiple days and offered tent camping in 2003. In addition to setting up a tent for a few days in one of the many expansive grass fields, one of the best spots to camp is near the picturesque Lake Eldorado. Additionally, Coachella offers car camping and has set up a series of shuttles with area hotels to give attendees a quick and safe ride to each locale. While you are allowed to bring your own food, beverages and beer (no hard alcohol), camping staples like grills, blankets and musical instruments, are not allowed.
In addition to providing a wide range of lodging and accommodations, the Coachella Music Festival has also set up many additional comforts. There are shuttles that go to area supermarkets, a farmer's market, yoga classes and plenty of other engaging activities. Additionally, there is a food court with vegan and non-vegan food, a general store and plenty of water fountains on the grounds. Coachella appeals to artistic types - you can paint using iridescent paint in the Art in the Dark Workshop or try to create a craft out of discarded products in the Recycle Goods Workshop. With this impressive list of activities, attendees will have a hard time packing them all into one day.
Each year, the Coachella Music Festival puts together one of the best lineups of musicians and comedians. With artists such as Radiohead, Madonna, Beastie Boys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Kanye West, Ben Harper and many more playing the Coachella stage in the past, planners continue to raise the bar to achieve the most compelling mix of musical talent.
