Chris Cornell has had his hand in some of the most popular alternative rock bands of the last 20 years. As the frontman for bands such as Soundgarden and Audioslave, his brooding vocals have become synonymous with the genre. However, he has also established himself as a viable solo act releasing numerous albums and performing to sold out audiences.

Cornell got his start in music as the lead singer for Soundgarden, which was formed in the mid 1980s. Although they were around for several years, Soundgarden did not take off until the early '90s and was one of the pioneers of grunge along with Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Alice in Chains. The band got its big break with 1994's Superunkown. The record featured a number of classic hits including "Black Hole Sun" and "Spoonman," and peaked at number one on the Billboard 200.

Soundgarden broke up in 1997 and Cornell quickly began a solo career and his first effort, Euphoria Morning, hit shelves in 1999. Though it was not a commercial hit, critics approved and its first single, "Can't Change Me," earned Cornell a Grammy nomination.

Despite making his foray into solo work, Cornell joined with several members of Rage Against the Machine in 2001 to form Audioslave. The band released three albums during their six year run, all of which were received very well by both critics and fans, thanks to tracks such as "Like a Stone," "Be Yourself" and "Out of Exile." Cornell was the main songwriter for the group, displaying the creative force that made Soundgarden a success a decade earlier. Despite their popularity, Cornell left the the band in 2007 to continue the solo career he had started in the late '90s.

Cornell released his second solo album, Carry On, in May 2007, shortly after leaving Audioslave. The record was a moderate success, and featured a unique cover of the Michael Jackson classic "Billie Jean." His follow up, 2009's Scream, was more popular as it featured a number of well-recevied singles including "Part of Me" and "Long Gone."

Since then, Cornell and Soundgarden reunited in 2010, and have been performing at various venues ever since. Whether he is heading up a band or entering new territory in his solo career, there's no denying Cornell has one of the most distinctive voices in music, and he will likely be around for years to come.
