Korn's origin as a band lay in the demise of the heavy metal band L.A.P.D. Containing three original members of Korn, L.A.P.D. broke up in 1993. James Shaffer, Reginald Arvizu, and David Silveria got together with Brian Welch and Jonathan Davis to form a new band. The band had trouble finding a name, finally "settling" for "Corn." Guitarist James Shaffer swapped the "C" for "K" and later stylized the reverse "R", creating the name that's electrified millions of fans for decades, despite its humble beginning.

Korn didn't labor in obscurity long. Their unique sound was recognized by an Epic Records employee and they were quickly signed. That unique sound became known as "nu-metal", and characterized their self titled debut album. The sound spread quickly, influencing the likes of Slipknot and Limp Bizkit. While Korn didn't make a huge splash on the US album charts, peaking at #72, it set them up for their breakout success.

That success came quickly with the follow-up, Life is Peachy. Peaking at #2 on the Billboard 200, Life is Peachy brought the band much greater recognition and a legion of new fans. The single "No Place to Hide" earned the group their first Grammy nomination, and the group went on to co-headline the Lollapalooza festival in 1997.

Korn's popularity continued to rise. The band embraced the emerging power of the Internet to connect with fans, creating "KornTV." The weekly show chronicled the creation of their third album, Follow the Leader, and gave fans a chance to interact with the band. The album became a big hit, debuting at #1 and going on to be certified 5x Platinum. The single "Freak on a Leash" earned the band their first Grammy Award.

Similar success met the release of 1999's Issues, which also debuted at #1, and Untouchables, which hit #2. The band's sound matured with Untouchables, moving away from nu-metal into an alternative metal sound that would characterize much of their work in the 2000s. Korn's popularity caused struggles with album leaks over the years, something that effected both Untouchables and the next album, Take a Look in the Mirror.

Korn continued to release top 5 albums throughout the rest of the decade, racking up four top 3 debuts and three Platinum albums between 2001 and 2010. "Here to Stay", from Untouchables, brought the group a second Grammy.

Korn works in other mediums, such as television, film, and video games, all while continuing to use the Internet to stay in touch with fans. They stay close in a more personal sense, as over the years Korn has been no stranger to the touring stage, cranking out powerful performances for thousands of fans. Korn's sound helped define a genre, and influenced a long list of famous metal acts. Don't miss them when they appear at a venue near you.
