Since it was founded in 1983 by Michael Burkett and Eric Melvin, NOFX has been one of the more prominent punk rock bands in the music industry. With a raw sound the band managed to make the transition from fledgling underground group in the latter half of the '80s, to a force in the punk revival of the 1990s.

After a producing a number of EPs during their formative years, NOFX released their full length debut in 1988 with Liberal Animation. While it did not earn much praise from critics and fans upon its initial release, it has since become a favorite among followers of the group and some tunes from it are still regularly played at their shows. Although their follow up, 1989's S&M Airlines, was more popular, NOFX was still waiting for their big break.

The released a trio of albums in the early '90s that continued to further their popularity among punk fans. However when pop punk became a success with the emergence of Green Day and The Offspring, NOFX took off. The 1994 album Punk in Drublic is the band's most successful album, and managed to be certified gold despite not earning any considerable radio play or exposure on television.

While NOFX may have reached its peak with Punk in Drublic, Melvin and the gang by no means slowed down after its release. In 1996, the band released its follow up, Heavy Petting Zoo, which became the band's first record to enter the Billboard charts. NOFX closed out the decade with three more albums, culminating in 2000's Pump Up the Valuum, which was a favorite among music critics and also managed to perform relatively well on the charts.

As the band entered a new decade, it began to take on a new sound. Gone were the juvenile-tinged punk songs and in their place were more politically driven tunes. The most notable release was 2003's The War on Errorism, which was received very well by an angered public, and reached the top spot on the Billboard Independent Album chart.

Since then, NOFX has continued to be a mainstay in the punk movement, and in 2010, the band released its most recent endeavor, The Longest EP, a compilation of more 30 songs spanning much of the last 20 years.
