Born Robert Bartleh Cummings in Haverhill, Massachusetts, the kid who grew up to be Rob Zombie was fan of comic books and horror movies. Both ended up strong influences in his work, both musical and otherwise. The world first got to know him as the front man for the band White Zombie.
White Zombie formed as a collaboration between Zombie, Ena Kostab, Peter Landau, and Zombie's then-girlfriend Sean Yseult. The lineup would change between the mid-80s and early 90s when they achieved mainstream success. Their third album, La Sexorcisto: Devil Music, Vol. 1, made it to #26 on the US charts and went 2x Platinum. The success was thanks in part to the track "Thunder Kiss '65" being featured on MTV's popular Beavis and Butt-head cartoon.
White Zombie disbanded in 1998 after a second successful album and a remix album. Zombie had legally changed his name at this point, and his inaugural solo album was already on the shelves. Hellbilly Deluxe remains Zombie's most successful solo release, and eclipsed all previous White Zombie releases.
The album, whose name was a play on the title of the popular Dwight Yoakam album Hillbilly Deluxe, drew on Zombie's love of horror movies, including samples from classics like Christopher Lee's Horror Hotel. It spawned three hits, including the first single "Dragula," which peaked at #6 on the US Mainstream charts. Dragula was a reference to the car of the same name driven by The Munsters.
While Zombie could not recapture the success of Hellbilly Deluxe, his following releases were hardly unsuccessful. 2001's The Sinister Urge put another Platinum record on Zombie's wall. After the release of The Sinister Urge, he began splitting his efforts between music and film, where he began his directing career with House of 1000 Corpses.
Zombie may have a solid career as a film director, but he never stopped making music. He released two more albums in the last decade, including 2010's follow-up to Hellbilly Deluxe, Hellbilly Deluxe 2. He found time for some touring as well, keeping fans pleased with performances as darkly theatrical as his music.
Rob Zombie continues to write new music and tour, providing fans of his films and music a pure heavy metal show with all the trappings of the horror films he loves. His film career may make those tours a little further apart, but that just makes his shows even more "must see" for fans. Don't miss the chance for Zombie to rattle your teeth when he passes through your town.
