Over the years, Tool has been a dynamic presence in the alternative and heavy metal scene that has gained a legion of followers from their trademark dark, thundering guitar riffs and free-flowing melodies. Merging elements of jam band sensibilities with heavy metal precision, Tool has carved a niche in the music industry as a trailblazer of modern rock with fans clamoring to see what they have in store next.
After releasing the EP Opiate in 1992, Tool burst onto the scene with Undertow, which peaked at No. 50 on the charts. With a mixture of prog rock sound, alt rock themes and powerful metal energy, Tool easily set themselves apart from other bands. The band enjoyed extensive airplay on modern rock stations with hits like "Prison Sex" and "Sober" and became a major draw in festival circuits around the U.S.
In 1996, Tool released Aenima, which reached No. 2 on the rock charts and some fans consider it to be the band's best album. With fan favorites like "Forty Six and 2" and "Stinkfist," the album became one of the most successful rock records of the late '90s and was certified triple platinum.
After Aenima, Tool kept their fans largely in the dark about their next release. While they kept touring, rumors about the band breaking up were fueled after lead singer James Keenan formed the successful alternative group, A Perfect Circle. Thankfully, Tool didn't let their fans wait too long and gave the modern rock world a much needed jolt with 2001's Lateralus. The album proved to be the band's biggest commercial triumph to date, with hit singles "Schism" and "Parabola." Lateralus won the band their second Grammy and as quickly as the band broke onto the scene, they went into hibernation to leave their fans waiting for more.
Tool returned in 2006 with the album, 10,000 Days, which was followed by an international tour that allowed the band to experiment with new lighting and video board techniques to enhance the concert experience. The album was an instant commercial success and gave legions of Tool fans a new chance to sample the dark and airy undertones of the new record.
Tool has become a modern rock success story that has managed to cross the tenuous bridge between heavy metal and alternative rock. As a result, the band has created legions of fans who have grown up with the free-flowing and powerful rhythms to wait with baited breath for Tool's next tour.
Tool 1 1
Best Concert Ever! While me & my family were stationed in Colorado I had the opportunity to see Tool, my favorite band in the whole world, in concert. I was fortunate enough to get tickets for me & my best friend to this awesome event. We had the best time ever! The light show was amazing. Maynard sang all my favorite Tool songs. And we left with such a great feeling. I would love to be able to see Tool again someday! February 22, 2011
