After Rihanna made waves in 2005 at the young age of 17, she has risen to become one of the most popular artists today. For the past five years, she has been accumulating hit after hit and continues tour extensively.
Rihanna started performing at a young age by forming a girl group with several of her friends in her native Barbados when she was 15. It did not take too long for her to get discovered, and she was introduced to music producer Evan Rogers, who recognized her talent immediately. Rihanna moved to the United States soon after she turned 16. After recording several demo tapes, Rogers played them for rap legend Jay-Z who quickly signed her to Def Jam records.
Rihanna's debut album, Music of the Sun, was released in August 2005 and featured the song "Pon de Replay," which quickly rose to number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Although it garnered mixed reviews from critics, fans responded favorably to the Caribbean-influenced pop music.
Her sophomore effort, Girl Like Me, was released in April 2006 and raised Rihanna to a new level. The first single off the release, "SOS," was immensely successful and reached number one on the charts - becoming her first single to reach that level. The album's second song, "Unfaithful," was equally popular and allowed Rihanna to debut a more mature, thematic sound to her music. The popularity of the album also allowed her to embark on her first U.S. tour during the summer of 2006.
Good Girl Gone Bad, released in 2007, was Rihanna's third album in just a two-year span. This compilation is home to one of her most famous songs, "Umbrella," which became her second number one track. It also contained several other massive hits including "Shut Up and Drive," "Don't Stop The Music," and "Disturbia." Around this same time, Rihanna was featured on T.I's song "Live Your Live," which also reached number one.
Her most recent album, 2009's Rated R, quickly gained popularity. Her collaboration with Jay-Z and Kanye West on "Run This Town" was one of the most successful songs of 2009.
