Lupe Fiasco is an up-and-coming rapper who was born and raised on the Westside of Chicago. Since so many know him by his stage name, "Lupe Fiasco," you may not know that his birth name is Wasalu Muhammad Jaco. He was born on February 16, 1982 to a Muslim family and began rapping when he was in the eighth grade. It wasn't until the age of 17 that Lupe seriously began to pursue his hip hop music career after hearing Nas' 1996 album, It Was Written. Lupe regards this album as his favorite album and his primary source of inspiration. Other influences include Japanese-anime culture, skateboarding, comic book culture, and different forms of art. At 19, Lupe joined a group called Da Park. They were signed by Epic Records and released a single but soon split up. Lupe soon began to have guest appearances on singles, released many mixtapes, and developed a fan base on the internet.

In 2004, Lupe Fiasco was signed with Atlantic Records and launched his own company, 1st & 15th Entertainment. During this time, the famous rapper and entrepreneur Jay-Z heard Fiasco and assisted him in the production of his album Food & Liquor, which then became his debut album. In 2005, Lupe appeared on a Kanye West track from West's album Late Registration. Lupe Fiasco's popularity slowly increased after the release of his first single "Kick, Push." Indeed, having association with big stars Jay-Z and Kanye West helped Lupe's popularity increase along with anticipation for his upcoming album Food & Liquor. An unfinished version of the new album leaked in the spring of 2006 but in September, the album was officially released and was later nominated for three Grammy's including "Best Rap Album." His album The Cool was released on December 18, 2007 in the U.S.
