The son of Cuban immigrants with a few brushes with the law in his youth, Armando Christian Pérez found new purpose in rapping. Of choosing his stage name, Pérez said "they bite to lock. The dog is too stupid to lose. And they're outlawed in Dade County. They're basically everything that I am. It's been a constant fight."
Pitbull's first exposure to a wide audience came thanks to Lil Jon, who gave him a track on the 2002 album Kings of Crunk. Lil Jon went one better, performing on and helping produce Pitbull's debut album, M.I.A.M.I. The album eventually reached the top of the US Rap Album charts and was certified Gold.
Pitbull built on his sold debut, going on the Anger Management Tour with Eminem and 50 Cent before retuning to the studio to release El Mariel in 2006 and The Boatlift in 2007. He branched out a bit that year, staring his own TV variety show on the mun2, the sister network of Telemundo.
Released in 2009, the album Rebelution would provide one of Pitbull's biggest hits, "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)." Peaking at #2 on the US Hot 100 and reaching the top 5 on charts around the world, the single would go Platinum in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and Spain.
Pitbull joined a large cast of Latin artists in 2010 for the Haiti benefit song "Somos El Mundo," and later that year released his first Spanish language album, Armando. It didn't take long to return to form with Planet Pit, which arrived in 2011 and charted the enormously successful "Give Me Everything" featuring Ne-Yo, Afrojack and Nayer.
