Few people have made an impact on the world of hip-hop from a young age, but that's exactly what Tyler the Creator has done as both a rapper and a record producer. Born Tyler Gregory Okonma in Ladera Heights, Calif., Tyler the Creator showed a musical acumen during his youth, teaching himself how to play the piano at 14 and imagining the day when he could design his own album covers and create track listings. Tyler the Creator had a remarkable childhood that saw him attend 12 different schools over the course of 12 years in the Los Angeles and Sacramento areas. Today, Tyler the Creator is known as the leader and co-founder of the alternative hip-hop group Odd Future, but has parlayed this success into a hugely successful solo career that shows no signs of slowing down.
By 2007, Tyler the Creator was already working on a number of Odd Future tracks and mixtapes, as well as self-releasing his first album, Bastard, on Dec. 25, 2009. The success of the album led to a recording contract with XL, and in 2011, he released his first studio record, Goblin. The singles "Yonkers" and "Sandwitches" proved to be major hits on the hip-hop charts and helped launch his path to superstardom. The album also featured a collaboration with Frank Ocean, who contributed vocals to the track "She," which is one of many singles that Tyler the Creator has released that combine the lyrical skills of some of today's top artists. The success of his first studio album lead Tyler to win Best New Artist for "Yonkers" during the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, which truly marked his arrival on the pop and hip-hop stage.
In 2013, Tyler the Creator debuted a series of new tracks to promote his third solo album, Wolf. "Domo 23/Bimmer" and "IFHY/Jamba" featuring Pharrell and Hodgy Beats posted strong showings on pop and hip-hop charts, and the album was boosted by a massive North American tour. The record also featured the return of long-time collaborators like Frank Ocean and Left Brain, who contributed their vocal skills to Tyler the Creator's unique hip-hop stylings.
In addition to being an established musician, Tyler the Creator has shown that he is a multi-talented artist, as he has not only produced a number of tracks for prominent hip-hop artists, but has also directed music videos, acted in a number of small- and big-screen roles and has even made his mark as a graphic artist.
