As one of the biggest Christian rock acts in the country, Casting Crowns has built up a steady following throughout the country that has translated into mainstream success. The band began in 1999 and was formed by Mark Hall, who was working at the First Baptist Church in Daytona Beach, Florida. The group's original lineup included violinist Melodee DeVevo and guitarists Juan DeVevo and Hector Cervantes. Later on, the lineup expanded to include bassist Chris Huffman, drummer Andy Williams and keyboardist Megan Garrett. After touring extensively throughout the south, the band's EP found its way into the hands of Mark Miller, the lead singer of the country group Sawyer Brown. While the band's songs were certainly devout and filled with scripture, Miller felt the band's pop/rock sound and Hall's impressive vocals were ready for the radio.
Casting Crown's self-titled debut album in 2007 became one of the fastest-selling Christian rock albums in music history. It shot to No. 2 on the Billboard 200 charts, a remarkable achievement in the genre of religious music. The singles "Voice of Truth" and "Who Am I" would prove to be unstoppable on the Christian rock charts and would expose a new legion of fans to Casting Crowns' music.
The band's sophomore effort, Lifesong, debuted at No. 9 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart and featured a string of Top 10 hits like "Lifesong," "Praise You in This Storm" and "Does Anybody Hear Her." The album was also followed with a live album called Lifesong Live, which allowed fans to experience the band's indelible stage presence.
Casting Crowns would best their previous efforts with the release of albums, The Altar and the Door and Until the Whole World Hears. Each album would debut in the Top 5 of the Billboard 200 Albums chart and would begin to create worldwide appeal for the band. The single, "East to West" sat at the top of the Christian rock charts for a record 16 weeks, solidifying their status as trailblazers in the genre. The band also released a Christmas album dubbed Peace on Earth, which would hit No. 15 on the charts and put other pop artists' holiday efforts to shame.
With millions of albums sold and a strong fanbase throughout the United States, Casting Crowns are the titans of Christian rock and look to be a force on the charts for the foreseeable future.
