Alanis Morissette was involved in the entertinament industry from a young age. She started acting in her teens, appearing on a popular Canadian childrens ensamble comedy as well as doing stage work in the late 80's. A would-be acting carrer wasn't the only path not taken by the star. Her musical career had a very different start from where she ended up.

It may be surprising to American audiences, but at one time, Alanis Morissette was known as "the Debbie Gibson of Canada." Four years before releasing the album that would cemenet her worldwide recognition as one of alternative rock's most well known female voices, the album Alanis introduced Morissette as a budding teen pop star.

The confection of light pop written by Morissette garnered mixed reviews and numerous comparisons to American contemporaries of the day such as Tiffany and Paula Abdul. It evetually acheived Platinum status in Canada. Following her initial modest succes, she released a second pop album the following year: Now Is the Time. Though not as big a seller, it did earn a gold record in Canada.

Morissette moved to LA and began working on her next album, one that would be a signifcant departure from her previous sound. That album, Jagged Little Pill, would go on to sell over 30 million copies worldwide, becoming the second best selling album by a female artist of all time. It earned four Grammy awards, including Album of the Year, and is citied as influencing a wave of new female voices in the music industry.

Subsequent the success of Jagged Little Pill, Morissette toured extensively before returning for a follow-up titled Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie. Released in 1998, the album was not the success of its predicessor, though that would have been a tall order. It debuted at #1, but ultimately sales were conaidered dissapoing, though mostly due to the long shadow cast by Jagged Little Pill. It eventulaly went Platinum three times in the US.

Morissette cointued to release albums over the course of the 2000s, starting with another "modest" #1, Under Rug Swept. Though the remainder of her albums have not faired as well, she's built a strong fanbase. 2012 saw the release of Havoc and Bright Lights which hit the Billboard 200 at #5 upon its debut.

Both long time fans and new ones keep up with her as she tours regularly. Morissette says she doesn't regret her early pop sound, though she prefers the iconic one she's most known for today. Be sure to catch the singer who helped inspire a generation of new female voices to sing their own songs.
