It's hard to look back in rock history without pausing at Bob Seger. The Detroit-born singer-songwriter is among the most iconic artists of the '70s and is responsible for some of the best songs of the era. With an instantly recognizable raspy voice, Seger remains required listening for anybody looking for an education in rock music.
Drawing inspiration from everybody from Little Richard to Van Morrison, Seger began his career in the mid '60s but it was not until the '70s that his music really began to take off. In 1976, he released the album Night Moves, which remains a classic to this day. The title track was wildly popular and eventually broke into the top five on the Billboard Hot 100. The song is often credited with single-handedly making Seger a household name and transforming him from a regional act to an international star.
If Night Moves put Bob Seger on the map, its follow-up is what kept him there. 1978's Stranger in Town contained what is considered to be one of the most popular jukebox songs of all time, "Old Time Rock and Roll." The tune has become somewhat of a cultural icon, making appearances in TV shows such as The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, and commercials and video games. But perhaps most notably in the 1983 film Risky Business, when an up-and-coming Tom Cruise burst out on the scene with a pantsless lip-sync to the song.
Though he may be best known for "Old Time Rock and Roll" and "Night Moves," Seger has a long list of classic tunes that almost any rock fan will be familiar with. "Against the Wind" became a popular song in the early '80s and remains an anthem for those who may be embroiled in a personal struggle. His songs have also been widely covered by other acts. Metallica breathed new life into the 1973 song "Turn the Page" when they released their own rendition of the song in 1998 - introducing the classic track to a whole new generation of music fans.
While it's been more than 40 years since Seger began his legendary music career, he is not slowing down anytime soon. Well into his '60s, he remains a favorite among rock fans and has even performed with some up-and-comers in the industry, from Zac Brown Band to Kid Rock.
