Child of the 80's, Elena Jane "Ellie" Goulding was probably too young to remember the time she spent in that decade. She developed an interest in music in the mid 90's, one that grew by the time early part of this century rolled around. It would be at the University of Kent that she would first discover electronic music, and that quickly became an integral element of her budding music career. As interest in her music began to grow, she left the university to pursue that passion.
In 2009, she signed to Polydoor Records and released her first EP, appropriately titled: An Introduction to Ellie Goulding. While the EP didn't chart, a number of the tracks from it ended up on her full length debut album: Lights. While the EP wasn't a huge seller, Goulding attracted the attention of music critics all over the UK. In 2010 she achieved something only one other artist had before her: winning the BBC Sound of 2010 poll, and Critics' Choice Award from the 2010 BRIT Awards. The last time that happened was two years previously, for Adele.
Lights arrived a few months after her first EP. The buzz built by critics, numerous guest spots on other artists' albums, and fans helped push it to #2 on the UK charts. Upon release, the albums first three singles performed well, though the title track would not become a single immediately. It was delayed again when the original Lights album was re-released as Bright Lights with a cover of Elton John's "Your Song" as the lead single. Goulding performed the tune at the royal wedding reception, and the single ended up the highest charting of her career at that time.
When released along with the US version of the album, "Lights" peaked at #2 on the US Hot 100. Unlike a lot of hits, "Lights" didn't start at the top. It spent 31 weeks on the chart, slowly climbing, before finally ending up in second place. The time spent on the charts earned it a 3x Platinum certification. While "Lights" climbed the charts, Goulding kept busy touring, both solo and with other acts, as well as working the festival circuit, including Coachella and Lollapalooza in 2011.
The follow-up to Lights, Halcyon, arrived in October of 2012. The album stuck to the formula of Lights, a mix of heavily electronic folk and pop backed by Goulding's critically acclaimed vocals. Halcyon hit #2 in the UK and peaked at #9 in the US
Goulding's strong reception by fans and critics alike is a credit to her skills as a songwriter as well as her uniquely powerful voice. She tours regularly in support of her albums, so be sure hear this amazing electropop talent when she's in a venue near you.
