Though it was formed less than two years ago, Furthur has already begun to establish itself as a force within the rock music world. The band is led by two former members of the Grateful Dead, guitarist Bob Weir and bassist Phil Lesh, and includes a collection of other talented musicians. Though they have yet to release a studio album, they have been performing relentlessly in their short time in the spotlight.

The band laid its foundation in 2008 when Lesh and Weir performed together for the first time in four years during a reunion of The Dead, the group formed after the death of Grateful Dead frontman Jerry Garcia. The Dead went on an extensive reunion tour during that year, and when it ended in 2009, Weir and Lesh decided to form their own band.

The duo was originally joined by a bevy of musicians from other groups including Dark Star Orchestra's John Kadlecik and RatDog keyboardist Jeff Chimenti. Furthur made their live performance debut in September 2009 when they took the stage at a show in Oakland. Throughout the rest of 2009, the band performed on numerous occasions across the United States.

Encouraged by the strong reception to their performances, the band continued to tour through early 2010 as well. The year proved to be a busy one for Further as they made appearances at a number of music festivals during the summer including the Nateva Music and Camping Festival in Oxford, Maine, the All Good Music Festival in Masontown, West Virginia, and the Gathering of the Vibes in Bridgeport, Connecticut.

Lesh and Weir are among the most iconic musicians of the last 40 years, especially in jam band circles. In addition to his work with The Dead and Furthur, Lesh has played bass alongside a long list of popular acts including Phish, Warren Hayes and Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes. Weir has been a mainstay in the music world ever since founding the Grateful Dead back in the late '60s, and has had his hand in numerous musical projects since then.

Though the Garcia passed away more than 15 years ago, the legacy of the Grateful Dead still lives on as Furthur regularly plays their songs at their shows in addition to a collection of new tracks. While the band has yet to release an album, chances are fans will have a release to look forward to in the near future if their quick success continues.

Furthur 5 5 1 1
Furthur, There is a band out on the highway Furthur has finally picked where the true GD left off before garcia's final woe years. I saw the GD 240+ times, and this band at times reminds me of hearing early 70's GD 72-74 era. They continue to grow w/ each new tour, which have been coming around like clockwork since the 1st Tour. ie Spring, summer & fall February 3, 2012
