JACKSON BROWNE:

The 1970s were one of the best times for singer-songwriters. Acts such as James Taylor, Simon and Garfunkel and David Nash all came to prominence during the period and left an indelible mark on the music world. Jackson Browne was of that ilk, and by way of compelling melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, the German-born singer became one of the most popular artists of the decade.

Browne began his career as a backup singer and songwriter for a number of established bands and performers, including Velvet Underground singer Nico. On her debut solo album, Chelsea Girl, Browne's lyrical acumen can be seen on what is considered one of her biggest hits, "These Days." Though he clearly had a penchant for composition, as evidenced by the fact his songs were recorded by the likes of Gregg Allman and the Eagles, it would be sometime before he became a popular artist in his own right.

Through his work with other artists, it became apparent that he was destined for greater things. In 1972 Browne released his self-titled debut album and his career began to take off. Thanks to songs such as "Doctor My Eyes" and "Songs for Adam," Browne began to establish a unique sound that would come to be a familiar part of popular music over the next several decades.

Though he has had a long and varied career, Jackson Browne is perhaps best known for his 1977 album Running on Empty. The title track, which some believes details the weary days spent on the road by musicians, is considered to be one of his most popular songs and enjoyed a bit of a resurgence when it was featured prominently in the 1994 film Forest Gump. Several years later, the single "Somebody's Baby" from the soundtrack of Fast Times at Ridgemont High, became his biggest hit in terms of chart performance as it peaked at number seven.

More recently, Browne may be best known for his fervent political activism, primarily his work to conserve the environment. Still, he has continued to record and release new music including the 2008 album Time the Conqueror, which was an ideal blend of both his political, and musical work. Though entering his mid-60s, Browne remains one of the most recognizable artists of the '70s and '80s, and continues to be a music icon.
