Sting is perhaps one of the most popular names in modern music, reaching the peak of his career when he served as the lead singer and bass guitarist of the famous rock band The Police. The band's most recognized hit single "Every Breath You Take" has become ingrained in pop culture, as it is frequently featured on TV shows and movies to this day. Although being part of The Police shaped his career in many unimaginable ways, many people simply may not realize that he had an incredibly long solo career, starting in the late 70s.

Growing up in Newcastle, England, Sting admits to sneaking into nightclubs to watch acts like Eric Clapton and Jimi Hendrix, who would later become the main influences for his own tunes. After graduating from Northern Counties College of Education, he worked as a schoolteacher for two years. Any time he had the chance, either during the evenings or weekends, he performed in jazz bands during his teaching years. Sting moved to London, where he formed The Police with Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani. The band immediately got off to a great start, releasing five chart-topping albums and taking home six Grammy Awards within five years.

After the release of the band's most popular album, which included the song "Every Breath You Take," The Police decided to throw in the towel - but this wasn't, by any means, the end for Sting.

All throughout the 80s, Sting as a solo artist continued to dominate the charts. His career even continued to gain momentum in the 90s, working with talents like Elton John and Bernie Taupin. He also featured a duet with Vanessa Williams on her album The Sweetest Days.

Sting has proved to be invulnerable to the progression of music in the new millennium. In fact, he actually became involved in the reformation of The Police in 2007 and went on a world tour. If there are only a handful of artists in the world who do what they do for passion instead of fame and fortune, Sting is definitely among them.
