This rock legend from Northern Ireland is unique in the sense that his music is now recognized almost as easily as it was during the late 60s. Even the most recent generations can sympathize with Van Morrison's most soul-inspiring songs, such as "Brown Eyed Girl" - which is frequently featured on TV shows and movies. In fact, the song was used as a reference to Julia Roberts in Pretty Woman. Providing an upbeat sound that's reminiscent of Irish folk songs, this talented performer can still be seen live today with a quality that's almost as crisp as when he was younger.
Since his rise to popularity in the late 60s and early 70s, Van Morrison began fusing classic soul tunes with modern rock and traditional Celtic music, making unique to the music scene of the era. Before this progression, Morrison started a cover band in the 1950s, experimenting with lead guitar, harmonica, keyboard and the saxophone. In the mid-60s, he became the lead singer of the band known as Them. This was when he wrote the pop classic "Gloria," which was remade several times by performers like Jimi Hendrix and Jim Morrison.
After receiving guidance from prominent producer Bert Berns, Van Morrison started his solo career with the release of hit singles that quickly reached the top of the charts. By the 1970s, Warner Bros. bought out Morrison's contract, making him a critically acclaimed artist with a solid reputation in the music industry. He spent much of his time collaborating with other popular artists like Georgie Fame and The Chieftains.
At the peak of his career, Van Morrison has been so well received that he has won six Grammy awards, joining the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriter’s Hall of Fame and appearing on several reputable "Greatest Artists" lists. Much like David Bowie and The Who, Morrison is one of the only top-notch classic rock artists from the genre's heyday that maintained his mainstream popularity, releasing albums throughout the 1980s and 90s. The artist continued live performances in 2008 after the release of his 33rd studio album, pleasing avid fans to this day with some of his most memorable tunes, as well as something new to expand his musical horizons.
