If there is one musical performer from the 90s who put Latin pop on the map worldwide, it was definitely Ricky Martin. Serving as an eccentric pop singer, actor and icon, this Puerto Rican star became a household name by the beginning of the millennium. However, most music fans probably don't realize that he jumpstarted his music career by participating in the Latin boy band known as Menudo before he became the famous solo artist. It may also come as a shock to learn that his solo career started in 1991. Ricky wasn't totally prevalent in the music industry until the release of the catchy "Livin' la Vida Loca" single, which forever secured his success on the international scene.
Martin was well known in most of Latin America since the 1991 release of his first solo album. It was at this time that he lived in Mexico and became a reputable star on TV shows. His introduction to entertainment in North America actually started with TV rather than music. He starred on the popular soap opera General Hospital in 1994. Becoming more focused on his primary passion, Ricky went back to the studio the following year and developed his third solo album, which was the start of his upward trend. This album was the first time Martin experimented with the fusion of traditional Latin music with modern pop and gained prominence in Spain and other European countries.
After his third album's worldwide tour, Martin moved to New York to join the cast of Broadway's Les Miserables, in which he played the younger lead character Marius Pontmercy. Between 1998 and 2000, Ricky made two of his most notable albums and recorded some of his first English songs. His hit single "La Copa de la Vida" quickly reached number one on the global charts and reached platinum status in several countries. It was this time when he won an incredible amount of awards, which led to the development of his first international hit single - "Livin’la Vida Loca."
In the following years, Ricky had the pleasure of working alongside Christina Aguilera, marking the peak of his career. For those who want to experience the perfect balance between modern pop and traditional Latin music, Ricky Martin is a great choice.
