The Joe Louis Arena, or the "Joe" as it's affectionately called by Detroit Red Wings fans, is one of the most storied venues in all of professional hockey and is one of the most electric atmospheres in all of sports. The building opened in 1979, has a capacity of more than 20,000 and sits in an area of Detroit called "Hockeytown." This district is a hockey fans paradise with sports bars, restaurants, stores and hockey events that are held year-round at the Joe. The heritage of the original six NHL teams is alive and well in the Joe Louis Arena, with a bevy of traditions that are unique to the venue. One of the Red Wings' most popular rituals is the throwing of an octopus onto the ice before the start of the playoffs. This hearkens back to when only four NHL teams made the Stanley Cup playoffs - the eight legs symbolized the eight wins needed to take home a championship.
All of this tradition has its roots in the stellar play that Red Wings' fans have become accustomed to over the course of the squad's long history. The Red Wings have won 11 Stanley Cups and have seen such NHL legends as Gordie Howe, Steve Yzerman and more than 50 other Hall of Famers don the white and red. The Red Wings have also won the President's Trophy for most wins in a season six times in their history, further illustrating their place at the top. Perhaps the greatest era of Red Wings hockey came in the early 1950s. The team terrorized the league behind the clutch play of Gordie Howe, Ted Lindsay and Sid Abel. The Red Wings cruised to Stanley Cup titles in 1950, 1952, 1954 and 1955, and they are still called one of the best squads to ever take the ice.
In recent years, the Joe Louis Arena has become the go-to spot in Detroit to see a large-scale musical performance, and many big names have graced the Joe's stage. Blockbuster tours including Carrie Underwood's Carnival Ride tour, Lady Gaga's Monster Ball tour and Ozzy Osbourne's Black Rain tour have enjoyed great success at the Joe.
The Joe Louis arena holds a special place in the hearts of Red Wings fans everywhere, but it is also the place to be when a big name performer is playing in the Motor City.
