The Stephen C. O’Connell Center is an indoor multi-purpose arena on the campus of the University of Florida in Gainesville, Florida. With a seating capacity of 12,000, the arena is primarily home to the Florida gators men’s and women’s basketball teams, but also houses the school’s volleyball, gymnastics, indoor track, swimming, and diving teams. The O’Connell Center is commonly referred to as “the O-Dome” and is considered a tough place for visiting basketball teams to play. Attend a Florida Gators game at the O’Connell Center and you’ll see why the arena has come to be known as “the House of Horrors”.
Opened in 1980, the Stephen C. O’Connell Center is named for a former president of the University of Florida. The building originally had an inflatable Teflon-coated fabric for a dome top. It has since been replaced with a hard shell. The university has actually bought the floor on which the team won their national championship in Indianapolis in 2006 and plans to install it as the permanent hardwood floor of the arena! This will add more history to what’s already become a great basketball tradition.
The intensity of the fan support and the talent on the court are perhaps tops in the NCAA, with Florida winning recent NCAA championships and with a bright future ahead. The “Rowdy Reptiles” student section leads the crowd in making the O-Dome one of the toughest places to play in college basketball. Buy Stephen C. O’Connell tickets and never miss an event at the O-Dome!
