Many people may be drawn to Glendale, Arizona because of its appealing climate, but this mid-size city has much more to offer than warm temperatures. A thriving sports culture combined with beautiful scenery makes this Southwestern enclave a hidden gem among the desert.

Perhaps the city's biggest resident is the Arizona Cardinals. Over the last several years, they have emerged to be one of the more consistent teams in the NFL, thanks in no small part to their beautiful stadium. The University of Phoenix Stadium was opened in 2006, and has since hosted a slew of important games including Super Bowl XLII and the 2011 BCS National Championship Game. It's not surprising given that it holds as many as 76,000 spectators all while offering a state-of-the art retractable roof.

Right next to the University of Phoenix Stadium is Jobing.com Arena, home to the NHL's Phoenix Coyotes. Opened in 2003, the venue offers much more than just hockey. With a 19,000 seat capacity it is a premier concert venue in the state.

Glendale is also close by the Tempe, which is home to the Arizona State Sun Devils. Sun Devil Stadium is one of the most iconic venues in all of college football, and taking in a game at this classic stadium is certainly an experience in itself. In fact, until recently it was host to numerous NFL games, and has been the site of numerous historical events, including a visit from Pope John Paul II in 1987.

For those looking to visit Phoenix from Glendale, you're in luck. The city is a short nine-mile drive from downtown Phoenix, so taking in all the popular southwestern city has to offer is a cinch. A trip to Phoenix will put a number of popular entertainment venues at your fingertips, including the Comerica Theater the Phoenix Symphony Hall.

The city is also close to the home of the Arizona Diamondbacks, who play their home games at Phoenix’s Chase Field, the first stadium in the United States to be built with a retractable roof. It also includes a number of unique features that few other ballparks are lucky enough to have, including a swimming pool located over the fence in right center field.
