Situated in the northeast corner of the state, Jacksonville, Florida, is often overlooked, but it shouldn't be. This bustling hub of sports, culture and history has as much to offer visitors as nearby Miami and Orlando, and is certainly a hidden southern gem.
Though not as well-known for professional sports as some other cities, the NFL's Jacksonville Jaguars are certainly looking to change all that. Ever since they came to the city as an expansion team in 1995, the Jaguars have regularly been in the contention in the AFC.
The Jaguars fan base may not be as large as some other big market teams, but it is definitely just as loyal. The Jags have played at EverBank Park since their inception, and it is among the most picturesque arenas in the league. The stadium can seat up to 76,000 people and is one of the few fields in the NFL where teams still play on real grass. With such lush amenities, it's no surprise that the venue hosted Super Bowl XXXIX in 2005.
While the Jaguars are the only major sports team to call Jacksonville home, the city certainly has more to offer than just athletics. For starters, it hosts a number of annual events that visitors should try to check out, most notably the Gate River Run. This 15-kilometer road race is often considered one of the best races in the country and can be a great thing to participate in, or simply just watch.
As for attractions, one of the highlights of the city is the renowned Jacksonville Riverwalk. Situated on the banks of the St. Johns River, this boardwalk has something for everyone, whether it be open air dining, museums, shopping or simply a chance to enjoy the beautiful Jacksonville weather.
It wouldn't be a trip to Florida without relaxing on the beach, and Jacksonville certainly has enough of them. Located just east of the city, visitors will want to stop by Neptune Beach. This sprawling shore offers sunbathers with plenty of pristine sand and crystal clear water.
The city may not be as publicized as Miami or as idealized as Key West, Jacksonville may just be the most underrated city in Florida. With sports, plenty of shopping, delicious dining and beautiful weather, a stop in Jacksonville is simply a must.
