As the original capital of Tennessee and one of the up-and-coming metropolises in the United States, Knoxville has a unique blend of history and modern flair that makes it one of the most beautiful urban areas in the country. As home to the flagship campus of the University of Tennessee there is always a large sporting event or public concert to check out.

The University of Tennessee dominates the sports scene in Knoxville, and the populace is fiercely loyal to its athletic programs. In particular, Tennessee football and women's basketball have been the most successful teams over the past few decades and have brought many exciting moments to Knoxville. The city is also home to the Tennessee Smokies, an AA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, as well as the Knoxville Ice Bears, who play in the Southern Professional Hockey League.

Those who are visiting town during the fall should be sure to check out Neyland Stadium, the fourth-largest football stadium in the country with a capacity of 102,455. The University of Tennessee has used this facility since 1926 and it has become a landmark in its own right.

Hockey fans in Knoxville are always pleasantly surprised by the intense action whenever the Knoxville Ice Bears take the ice. The team has been in existence since 2002 and plays their games in the expansive James White Civic Auditorium and Coliseum. This venue is also used to hold large concerts and other events, and is located in the heart of downtown Knoxville.

Sports are certainly a way of life in Knoxville, but culture also thrives in the southern city. Music fans can always find something they like at The Bijou Theatre, which regularly contains jazz, choral and instrumental groups. Finally, if there's a big concert in town, it's probably being held at the Thompson-Boling Arena, home of the University of Tennessee's basketball program.

If these venues aren't enough, visitors should be sure to check out the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame during their time in Knoxville, or one of many cultural festivals and conventions that take place year-round.
