Rupp Arena is an indoor multi-purpose athletic facility in Lexington, Kentucky. It is part of Lexington Center, a shopping and convention district owned by the city and county government. The arena is primarily the home of the University of Kentucky Wildcats basketball program, and is the only off-campus home court of any SEC team. Opened in 1976, the arena is named for UK’s legendary coach, Adolph Rupp. Visitors to Rupp Arena will be astonished by the size of the crowd and the intensity of the student section, led by the “eruption Zone”. Who knows, you might even see Ashley Judd cheering the team on from the student section!
Rupp Arena hosts many more events than just Wildcat men’s basketball. The women’s squad has seen recent success, which has them playing more and more games at Rupp Arena. The arena has also been used as a theatre and concert hall, as well as minor league hockey, arena football, and various NCAA tournament games. Rupp Arena has been a wonderful home court for the Wildcats, helping them win nearly 90% of their home games!
Rupp Arena is a unique experience for basketball fans or any other visitors in that its design allows a large crowd capacity in a small space. Partly due to the fact that many of the seats in Rupp don’t have backs - the upper bowl of the arena is all bleachers. This makes for a raucous environment for visiting teams and an exciting venue for fans to watch basketball, see concerts or any other event.
