Few cities are more replete with southern charm than Louisville. Situated on the banks of the Ohio River, this famous locale is certainly among the most unique destinations in the United States. With a rich history and beautiful scenic vistas, one trip to Louisville will have you humming "My Old Kentucky Home" soon after you've left.
Affectionately referred to as the Gateway to the South, Louisville is perhaps best known for being one of the hubs of horse racing in the U.S. This is thanks in large part to the fact that it's home to Churchill Downs, and more specifically, the Kentucky Derby. Also known as the Run for the Roses, the Derby has been held the first Saturday in May since 1872, and caps a two-week long celebration.
Although horse racing flows through the veins of the city, it is also one of the biggest college sports centers in the country. Though they have no pro sports teams, the University of Louisville is one of the most storied college basketball programs in the NCAA. They play their home games at the KFC Yum! Center, one of the newest and most modern venues in the country. Louisville also has a competitive baseball program, who recently made a push to the College World Series in 2007. They play at Jim Patterson Stadium, which is among the best places in the NCAA to catch a college baseball game.
While sports are ingrained in the hearts and minds of Louisville citizens, the city is also home to a burgeoning indie music scene. Numerous bands have come out of Louisville over the last several years including My Morning Jacket and The Villebillies. However, any avid music fan will want to come to Louisville during July, as the city hosts the Forecastle Festival. The three-day event is widely regarded as one of the top outdoor festivals in the country and has featured the likes of The Black Keys, The Flaming Lips and Band of Horses.
Louisville also enjoys a thriving theater scene, highlighted by The Louisville Palace, a beautiful venue opened in 1928. This historic building has been a popular spot for intimate concerts, movie showings and stage shows, and is certainly a must-see to complete your Lousiville expereince.
