About the American League: Major League Baseball’s American League (AL) is one of the oldest professional sports organizations in US history. It was formed in 1901, about 25 years after the formation of the National League (NL), the other half of Major League Baseball (and thus why it’s sometimes called the “Junior Circuit”). It was shortly after the AL’s creation in 1903 when the first World Series took place, and the only time it has not been played was in the strike-shortened 1994 season.
The AL has three divisions: the West, Central and East (see above for team breakdown). The most recent World Series winner to come out of the AL was the New York Yankees, who have won 27 of the 206 championships, or a little more than a quarter of them. Forty of the AL titles have gone to the Yankees, while the Oakland Athletics have capture 15 tickets to the World Series, and the Boston Red Sox, twelve.
