The Astros have moseyed on over to the American League over the off-season, and this is your first chance to see them play as an AL team with a full-time designated hitter. They’ll face the new division- foe Texas Rangers in the first series of the 2013 season at Minute Maid Park, which will also be the first game of the MLB season overall on March 31st while the rest of the teams will have their first pitches on April 1st.
The Astros have had to bring in a few players to make them a more viable American League squad as they’ll now have to keep up with some of the top offensive teams in baseball. They’ve brought in slugger Carlos Pena, who will likely rotate between first base and DH, hit 19 HRs last season for the Rays but is only a year removed from a 28 HR, 27 doubles season with the Cubs. Also brought in to compete for spots is Rick Ankiel and Erik Bedard who will need to prove their worth over the current Astros youngsters. This team can only go up from 2012 and a good start against the Rangers can get Houston excited about baseball once again.
