2015 Detroit Tigers Season Preview

The Tigers entered 2014 with hopes of reaching the World Series. They had the best hitter in baseball in Miguel Cabrera, as well as a pitching rotation that included Justin Verlander, David Price, and Max Scherzer. The Tigers rode this trio to their 4th straight AL Central Pennant. But the Tigers collapsed in the later parts of the season, and ended up getting swept by the Orioles to end the season. The 2015 Detroit Tigers look to get back to the ALCS, and come into the season with a similar roster to last season. The 2015 Tigers pitching rotation will once again feature aces Justin Verlander and David Price, as well as rising stars Anibal Sanchez and Joakim Soria. The biggest hurdle that the Tigers will have in 2015 will be the strength of the AL Central. The 2015 AL Central will feature the returning AL Champion Kansas City Royals, as well as a strong Cleveland Indians club. But with all the firepower on the Detroit Tigers roster, expect them to once again be in the hunt in 2015.

2014 Detroit Tigers Season Preview

The Detroit Tigers fell just short of a return to the World Series, losing to the Boston Red Sox in 6 games in the ALCS. This year's club has all the tools to make it back to the fall classic on both sides of the ball and are the overwhelming favorites in the AL Central. The Tigers locked up Miguel Cabrera until the year 2049 it seems, so they'll have that powerful bat in the lineup for many years to come. On the pitching side they did lose Doug Fister, but the top three in their rotation could rival any in baseball.

The big trade of the offseason was the Tigers sending Prince Fielder to Texas in return for Ian Kinsler, and the second baseman will likely be hitting at the top of the lineup. Kinsler, Torii Hunter, Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez comprise the top half of one of the strongest batting orders in the game today.

2012 Detroit Tigers Season Preview

The Tigers are looking to build on winning the AL Central crown for the first time since joining the division in 1998 and sporting perhaps the best hitter and pitcher in the league doesn’t hurt. The offensive prowess of Miguel Cabrera and dominance of Justin Verlander took the Tigers to the ALCS in 2011 where the Motown squad was stopped by the big bat of Nelson Cruz. This season the Tigers are going for it all. Detroit broke the bank signing Prince Fielder to a nine-year, $214 million contract after Victor Martinez went down with a torn ACL that will likely keep him out of the entire 2012 season. Fielder is sure to grace Comerica Park with 35+ home runs this season as he moves Cabrera over to third base. Also joining in 2012 is Octavio Dotel, providing support to the raucous Jose Valverde, who led all of baseball in saves last year at 49. Joaquin Benoit and Daniel Schlereth also figure to provide quality innings out of the bullpen. Detroit is more than just the established star power of Fielder and Cabrera, as youngsters Alex Aliva and Brennan Boesch have both emerged as solid major league starters. Avila hit .295 with 19 HR in 2011, which earned the catcher a spot on the all-star team and a 12th place finish in MVP voting. Boesch showed his rookie season was no fluke by hitting more home runs (16 to 14) in fewer bats (428 to 464) and improving his batting average to .283.

2011 Detroit Tigers Season Preview

With his rough-and-gruff attitude, Jim Leyland is one of the best managers in Major League history. So when his celebrated first baseman and last year’s American League MVP runner-up Miguel Cabrera had off-the-field issues at the beginning of spring training, it was understood that it would be taken care of. So far in spring training, it looks like it has. The Tigers are in tough spot— tons of talent surround a great coach, but in a division that has two teams that are built the same (power hitting with a solid, if unspectacular, starting line-up). To lose Cabrera would be a huge loss and a possible demotion to the bottom of the division. However, a productive Cabrera, mixed in with a possible resurgence of Carlos Guillen and Magglio Ordonez could put them over the top. Pitching-wise, the Tigers are as solid as most in the American League Central, even with their middle-of-rotation man Jeremy Bonderman taking the year off with what some suspect is a dead arm. Justin Verlander is a true ace, with more strikeouts over the past two years than anyone not named Tim Lincecum. Max Scherzer had a bumpy road leading into the American League after his trade from the Arizona Diamondbacks, but rebounded to finish the season nicely. Rick Porcello, Phil Coke and Brad Penny finish out the rotation, and if they hold the line for the Tigers, and Guillen and Ordonez come through, the Detroit Tigers could be a team on the rise in 2011.

2010 Detroit Tigers Season Preview

The Detroit Tigers consistently have some of the hardest flamethrowers and hottest bats in Major League Baseball, and the 2010 season is no different. Nothing gets fans off their feet in the late innings like the sight of franchise player Miguel Cabrera standing in the batter's box with the game on the line. He's only 26 years old, but the power hitting third baseman has already made four All-Star teams, won the World Series and captured the American League home run title. It seems like the AL Central division always comes down to the last game of the season, but the Tigers have made some adjustments to improve their chances down the home stretch this year. Proven closer Jose Valverde joined the team this year, hoping to close out the low scoring games that sizzling ace Justin Verlander starts. Additionally, after last year's impressive World Series performance with the New York Yankees, centerfielder Johnny Damon has signed on with the club. Perhaps the most exciting part of the 2010 Detroit Tigers season will be seeing what young prospects pitcher Rick Porcello, second baseman Scott Sizemore and outfielder Austin Jackson can do with their opportunities to become household names.

2009 Detroit Tigers Season Preview

The plan for the 2009 Detroit Tigers is to climb out of the AL Central basement and return to their spot at the top of the division. For the 2009 Tigers to do that they will need to get solid pitching from the likes of Justin Verlander and timely hitting from players like Adam Everett, Carlos Guillen and Miguel Cabrera. If Detroit pulls off that combination then the fans in Motown will be cheering a potential pennant winning baseball club.

2008 Detroit Tigers Season Preview

The Detroit Tigers are one of the most exciting teams to watch in baseball this season. They've proven themselves to be unpredictable in recent years, winning a Wild Card berth and the ALCS in 2006, and then not quite making the playoffs in 2007. With the leadership of Ivan Rodriguez, Miguel Cabrera, Kenny Rogers, and Gary Sheffield to name only a few, the Tigers look incredibly talented. Comerica Park in downtown Detroit will be teeming with Tiger fans looking for their team to revisit the World Series and this time bring home the title.
