The NASCAR Bojangles’ Southern 500 is held at Darlington Raceway in Darlington, South Carolina. Typically held on Mother’s Day weekend, Bojangles’ 500 runs in April annually. It is the opening race for the track and also runs the NASCAR Nationwide Series the same weekend. Over the years the track has had many changes, including its moniker and the length of the race itself, from 300 to 400, and now 500 miles. While it has had to fight to stay in NASCAR, it’s had sell-out crowds for the last four years and doesn’t get the nickname, “The Track Too Tough To Handle” from just anywhere! 2013 Bojangles' Southern 500 Preview
Leading up to this historic race, seven NASCAR races will already have run. This race will play out differently than most, the track itself is and egg-shape oval, making the set up on the car more difficult. The track itself is 1.336 miles around and the race is 367 laps. This is the infamous wall where drivers earn their “Darlington Stripes.”
With 13 laps to go, Matt Kenseth took the lead and won the race in 2013, out-gunning team-mate Kyle Busch. Turns out Busch had a cut right rear and had to slow down in the final laps. Kenseth ran all 367 laps in 3:32:45, at an average speed of 141.3.

The Bojangles’ 500 is typically held on Mother’s Day at Darlington Raceway, but this year will run on April 12, 2014. The track was built around a minnow pond, now long gone, which makes up its unusual egg-shape oval. This configuration makes setting up the car difficult because one turn is tighter than the other. The track itself is 1.336 miles long and the race is 367 laps, which is 501 miles and is done at an average speed of 132.8 MPH. Seating capacity at Darlington Speedway is 75,000. While the Bojangles’ 500 is the biggest event at the speedway, it’s not the only one. There is the Nationwide Series that also runs that weekend and the speedway boasts a Stock Car Museum.
This historic speedway has another nickname that is well known amongst drivers, “The Lady in Black.” The walls around the track are always painted white prior to a race, but are always largely black at the end of the race because of tire contact with the wall, earning drivers their “Darlington Stripes.” Let TicketCity get you to this once a year event, your pit stop for all tickets NASCAR!
There are four sections of grandstands at Darlington, each with a unique vantage point. The backstretch of grandstands called the Colvin Section, runs center along the straightaway. On the opposite side of the track, where pit road and the flag stand sit, are the Wallace and Tyler Towers, again sitting center on the straightaway. On turn four sits the Pearson grandstand with upper and lower seating. In turn one sits the Brasington Tower, with a view to pit road and turns one and two. When sitting in the lower grandstands, wear earplugs, clear glasses and ladies tie your hair back, the wind from the cars comes fast.
