The Geico 400 is held in Joliet, Ill., in September and is one of the few NASCAR races run at night. It is a relatively new race added to the Chase for the Sprint Cup series with the inaugural race running in 2001. This is a triple-header Chase weekend, with the Camping World Truck Series, EnjoyIllinois.com 225 and the Nationwide Dollar General Powered by Coca-Cola 300 series running with the NASCAR Geico 400. To make the experience more exciting, NASCAR fans can get pit and infield access, have photos taken in victory lane and get front row seats to the pre-race concert and driver introductions! 2013 Geico 400 Preview
This is the first race in the 10-race Chase series, the 27th race on the Sprint Cup series. The track is notorious for close finishes for all classes, and six of the last eight races at this track have ended with a margin of victory less than one second for NASCAR. The weekend begins with qualifying for all classes battling for the coveted pole position in their prospective races. Pre-race activities include pit and infield tours, concerts and tailgating!
In 2013, controversy surrounded the start of the race with a match-fixing scandal that had two teams on probation and Jeff Gordon’s team receiving special permission to enter the Chase series. After two rain delays of over 6 hours, Matt Kenseth with the Joe Gibbs Racing team won the race by completing all 267 laps in 3:10:56 at an average speed of 125.8 MPH and winning $334,891.
Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway Address: 500 Speedway Blvd, Joliet, Illiinois, 60433
The Chicagoland Speedway is relatively new to NASCAR. Built in 2001, and is host to the opening Chase for the Sprint Cup series in September. The tack is considered a “D” tri-oval that is 1.5 miles long and holds the record for closest race finishes, which includes the Indycar series as well as NASCAR. Unlike most tracks, seating at Chicagoland is only along the front straight, stretching from turn one to turn four, with a seating capacity of 75,000 dedicated fans. Tower seating is available along most of the stretch with the addition of VIP and club seating. Other major events held at the speedway are the ARCA and TORC series.
The ChicagoLand Speedway sits adjacent to the Route 66 Raceway, which hosts a multi-million dollar quarter-mile drag strip and a half-mile oval dirt track that entertains the World of Outlaw Sprint Car Series. Start your journey to this opening Chase event at Chicagoland Speedway with TicketCity- The one-stop place for NASCAR tickets!
While most raceways have seating around the track, Chicagoland has seating along the front straight. The front straight consists of the curved part of the “D” in the tri-oval with grandstands stretching around the curve. The advantage in this type of grandstand arrangement is almost all the seats give the fans a view of pit road. Lower grandstands are E,F,G,I and J, mid sections are D,F,G,I and J, with the top tier consisting of sections A,B,C,G and H. There are 75,000 available seats for the most dedicated of NASCAR fans! Come in September for the Triple Header weekend or in July for the ARCA Re/Max Series. When sitting in the lower grandstands, wear earplugs, clear glasses and ladies tie your hair back, the wind from the cars comes fast and furious.
