2011 Samsung Mobile 500 Preview:
The Sprint Cup Series is in full swing and the chase is beginning to heat up. A slew of front runners are currently leading the pack, with Carl Edwards ahead in the points, but all that could change when NASCAR's best invade Texas Motor Speedway on April 9 for the Samsung 500.
Though the Samsung has been a staple on the circuit for more than 10 years, the 2011 edition of the race will be different. In years past the event had been a Sunday afternoon race, but this year organizers moved it back to Saturday night, giving the best drivers in the sport a prime-time spotlight.
The young season has been kind to Edwards, who has one win and two poles in his five starts this year, which has given him a slim edge over the field. With three top five finishes and four top 10s, Edwards has to like his chances to capture the Sprint Cup title this season for the first time in his career. A good finish at the Samsung would be a big step forward.
Behind Edwards is a veritable who’s-who of big name drivers, including Kyle Busch, Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart, all of whom will be at Texas next Saturday. Five time defending Sprint Cup champion Jimmie Johnson (who currently sits in fifth in the standings) will be in the field as well.
Aside from the impressive lineup of drivers, the Texas Motor Speedway has become one of the most iconic venues in the sports. Opened in 1997, the 1.5 mile track, located in Fort Worth, has gained fame for handing out cowboy hats to its winners. It also has some considerable history. Some of the most legendary names in the sport have won there, including Jeff Gordon, Dale Earnhardt, Jr., and Mark Martin.
However, what's interesting is that despite the fact that all of the famous names have won - they have only done so once. In fact, it took 11 seasons of racing at the track for there to be a repeat winner, when Jeff Burton won for the second time there in 2007.
With the ability to hold well over 135,000 people, there are few arenas in all of sports that can compete with watching a race at the Texas Motor Speedway.
