The Celtics are perhaps the NBA's most recognizable franchise, tracing its roots back to 1946 as a founding member of what was then called the Basketball Association of America. The Celtics made their mark on NBA history shortly after naming Arnold "Red" Auerbach the head coach. Acting as both head coach and general manager, Auerbach constructed a roster that consisted of NBA all-time greats Bob Cousy, Bill Sharman, John Havlicek, Tom Heinsohn, Sam Jones, K.C. Jones and, of course, Bill Russell. Auerbach's Celtics steamrolled the NBA for more than a decade, winning championships in 11 of 13 seasons between the 1956-57 and 1968-69 campaigns. Boston was once again champs in 1973-74 and 1975-76 after adding stars Dave Cowens and Jo Jo White. Continuing its tradition of winning titles with star players, the Celtics took home three championships in the 1980s on the backs of Larry Bird, Kevin McHale, Dennis Johnson and Robert Parish. Following Bird's retirement in 1992, the Celtics had a losing stretch. The streak was broken with Boston's 17th NBA title in 2008, when the Celtics started the "Big 3" trend in the NBA by pairing Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen with longtime Boston star Paul Pierce. The Celtics have honored 22 former players and executives by retiring their numbers. Score with TicketCity - the place to go for Boston Celtics basketball tickets.
2014 Celtics Season Preview
It was one of the toughest seasons in Celtics history in 2012-13, starting with a season-ending Rajon Rondo injury and ending in the departure of Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce to the Nets and Doc Rivers to the Clippers. MarShon Brooks and Kris Humpries joined the team in the Nets trade and hope to head this team in the right direction with the help of a fresh Rondo. The Celtics went out and plucked Brad Stevens from Butler, and one of the most successful college basketball coaches in recent history will have his hands full in Boston.
The Celtics open up the season with a game in Canada, facing the Raptors on Halloween. They’ll be back in the U.S. the next night to face the Bucks at the TD Garden for their home opener before hitting the road once again. Other key home games will be vs. the Knicks on Dec. 13, vs. the Lakers on Jan. 17 and vs. the Nets on Jan. 26 when they’ll welcome back KG and Pierce for the first time since the trade.
