The Minnesota Timberwolves have only been around since 1989, yet the team has enjoyed a period of sustained playoff success throughout its short history. With a division championship and a conference finals appearance to their credit, the T-Wolves have given the citizens of Minnesota plenty to be excited about.
The Timberwolves were unable to reach the playoffs during their first few years in the league, but they turned into instant contenders when they drafted the electrifying forward Kevin Garnett. In the 1996-97 season, Garnett and point guard Stephon Marbury became one of the most fearsome duos in the NBA, which brought them to the playoffs in Marbury's rookie year.
Unfortunately, the Timberwolves couldn't get past the first round of the playoffs from 1997-2003. However, their luck changed in 2004 when the team paired Kevin Garnett with a slew of experienced veterans like Latrell Sprewell, Sam Cassell and Michael Olowokandi. This was Garnett's MVP year and he earned it in the playoffs by dispatching the Denver Nuggets and the Sacramento Kings in the first two rounds.
Sadly for fans, the Timberwolves' winning streak ended in the conference finals in a faceoff with the Los Angeles Lakers, who won the series in a hotly contested six games. Nonetheless, the franchise is likely looking to return to the playoffs and secure the team's first championship victory.
