Those searching for tickets to college football's national championship game might find this obvious: They're available, but they're expensive.

Most online ticket broker or trading Web sites list tickets for the game between Ohio State and LSU, which will decide the national title one month from today, at an average price of $1,500.

"Last year's game was our second-best selling event of all time," said Sean Pate, director of communications for StubHub.com, an online ticket version of eBay in which sellers can post available seats. "This one has already climbed to seventh, and there is still a month to go."

Total purchase price for last year's game reached well into the seven figures, Pate said, and the company expects the same this season. Part of the demand comes from LSU's appearance at the site a little more than an hour from its Baton Rouge, La., campus.

Each college received 16,000 tickets to distribute among its students, season ticket holders and others associated with the school.

Those buying online are paying steep prices. TicketCity.com listed an increase in average price of more than $300 to $1,682 following Sunday's announcement of the pairing. The second-highest average for a bowl game is $518 for Rose Bowl tickets. Championship game ticket prices ranged from $1,150 to $3,850.

Numbers were similar at StubHub, which had 299 listings Thursday afternoon ranging in price from $1,042 to $4,618. Many OSU fans are concerned that the extra tickets will be snapped up by the closer LSU fans, but Pate said some are wondering if Buckeyes fans are ready to again open their wallets after last season's run to the title game.
