One of the oldest and most prolific franchises in the history of the National Football League is the Detroit Lions. This team, which was established in 1929, has made 14 appearances in the postseason. Their latest debut in the playoffs occurred in 1999.
The Lions have also been given the privilege of playing in the traditional Thanksgiving Day football game every year. The Detroit fanbase was known as one of the most loyal in the league. The Lions have four Super Bowl wins under their belt, the latest one coming in 1957 against the Cleveland Browns.
Since establishing themselves as a contender in the league, the Lions have seen a number of former players enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame, including Joe Schmidt, Dick LeBeau and Barry Sanders. Detroit has also retired a series of numbers throughout its history, most notably 20, 56 and 22. Number 20 belonged to Barry Sanders, who was arguably one of the most talented, significant half backs of his day.
Today, the Detroit Lions play in the NFC North, alongside the Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears.
