Miami started its professional football days in the old AFL, but joined the NFL in 1969. The first few years of Dolphins football started out slowly, with the team posting losing records each of their first few seasons. Then the Dolphins hired former Baltimore Colt coach Don Shula as the new head coach. With his winning pedigree, Shula led the Dolphins to a 10-4 record and brought them to the playoffs for the first time. Making the playoffs was just the tip of the iceberg for Shula’s Dolphins however. In 1971 his club clinched its first division title and reached the Super Bowl before falling to the Dallas Cowboys. In 1972 Miami finished with a perfect record and would win Super Bowl VII. The following year, the Dolphins returned to the Super Bowl and won their second consecutive title. Miami would make the Super Bowl for a fourth time with Bob Griese under center in 1982, and once more with quarterback Dan Marino in 1984. The Dolphins have retired the numbers of Griese, Marino, and running back Larry Csonka. Check out our Miami Dolphins History page for more information. 2015 Dolphins Season Preview
The Dolphins are coming off an 8-8 season where Ryan Tannehill was running for his life for half the season. The former Texas A&M star was sacked 58 times in 2013, and the Dolphins decided to address the offensive line position immediately. While Richie Incognito and Jonathan Martin are no longer with Miami after the bullying issue, the Fins brought in Brandon Albert in a big-money free agency deal, as well as tackles JaWuan James and Billy Turner in the first few rounds of the NFL draft. A few guys were also brought in at the skill positions, including RB Knowshon Moreno and WR Jarvis Landry. Landry could be the starting slot receiver behind Brian Hartline and Mike Wallace if all goes well in the preseason. The Dolphins will kick off the season at Sun Life Stadium with a Week 1 contest against the New England Patriots, which is a tough immediate test for the Fins. Miami will also see early home games against the Packers and Chiefs, guaranteeing we’ll know what kind of chances this team has early on. The Dolphins will also hit the road to play some tough squads including the Bears, Broncos and Patriots before finishing the season at Sun Life against the rival Jets.

Dolphins vs. Jets
These two teams have met nearly 100 times and this rivalry is almost evenly split in the win/loss column. With over 15 division titles between the two teams, this matchup usually has a lot on the line that only intensifies this rivalry. When you consider both teams have won a Super Bowl, it is no wonder why this has become one of the best rivalries in the NFL.
Dolphins vs. Patriots
It is not a surprise that the two most successful franchises in the AFC East and the only two teams that have gone undefeated during the entire regular season since the 1970 merger would be rivals. With multiple Super Bowl titles and over 40 playoff appearances, these two teams show no signs of slowing down and this rivalry is still very much alive.
Dolphins in the Super Bowl, AFC Championship and NFL Playoffs
With multiple Super Bowl victories, 10+ division titles, and over 20 playoff appearances, the Miami Dolphins have established themselves as one of the best franchises in the NFL. An organization that started in 1966, “The Fins” will only continue to add to the legacy that was created over 40 years ago.
