2009 Atlanta Falcons Football Preview:
The Atlanta Falcons head into 2009 with a huge head of steam off their magnificent 2008 campaign. The Falcons came out of nowhere to shock the league with an 11-5 record. Much of the Falcons rebirth has been attributed to the play of then-rookie QB Matt Ryan. Ryan, the Boston College grad, looked like a veteran signal caller in 2008; he'll need to repeat that in 2009 for the Falcons to make some noise. The good news for Atlanta is that Ryan is not the only star on the offensive side of the ball; Atlanta has a dynamic duo at running back with Michael Turner and Jerious Norwood. ATL fans also have to love the promise that wide receiver Roddy White showed in '08, White is looking like a star waiting to happen. The Falcons defense should give some headaches to teams coming into the Georgia Dome. Led by sack master John Abraham, the Falcons defense will be a solid group. Coach Mike Smith's team will not sneak up on any other NFL teams in 2009, but they will not need to because they are a good football team.

The Atlanta Falcons play football in the South Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). The Falcons franchise first fielded a team in 1966 as part of that year's NFL expansion. The team has seen some playoff success in the late 1970's/early '80s, and again in the 1990's, with their best success coming in 1998 when they made it to Super Bowl XXVIII as the "Dirty Birds" and lost to John Elway and the Denver Broncos in his last season. 2001 marked the arrival of Michael Vick, upon whom the future of the franchise seemed to hang. His suspension came as a great blow to the team's future, but the NFL is in many ways designed for teams to correct such a problem through trades and the draft. Look for the Falcons to come out on top in the coming seasons.

The Atlanta Falcons play their home games at the Georgia Dome in Atlanta, Georgia. The stadium has a capacity of more than 71,000 and is sill the largest indoor sports facility in the United States. Fans attending a Falcons game at the dome this coming season will wait with bated breath to see what team emerges - a Falcons squad still reeling from the loss of Vick or a team ready to put its past behind it and look to the future.
